CRAWL SPACE ENCAPSULATION – SHOULD YOU DO IT?
Crawl space encapsulation is a process that involves sealing off the crawl space beneath a home to protect it from moisture, pests, and temperature fluctuations. This is done by covering the ground and walls with a durable vapor barrier, typically made from thick plastic sheeting, and sealing any vents or gaps that allow outside air to enter. Some systems also include insulation and a dehumidifier to control humidity levels. Encapsulation helps to prevent mold growth, wood rot, and structural damage caused by excess moisture, while also improving indoor air quality and energy efficiency by reducing the exchange of air between the crawl space and the home.
Encapsulation is basically sticking a plastic bag inside of a wet box. Crawl space encapsulation doesn’t stop moisture from forming in your crawl space. All it does is hold in any moisture that forms inside the encapsulation and hide all of the moisture damage that is happening on your crawl space walls. On top of all the damage it can do to your crawl space encapsulated crawl spaces also form a sickly, strong ammonia smell that will eventually make its way inside the home. The only benefit to crawl space encapsulation is that it gives any contractor working in your crawl space a clean environment to work in.

ABOUT US
Growing up in Louisiana gave our owner, Mike, firsthand experience about the problems that can be experienced with moisture issues. The low water table and severe storms make many parts of the state rather soggy. Mike saw his family home flooded several times, and that led to him having a keen interest in waterproofing.
