THE SOLUTION TO THEIR WET BASEMENT

For this job we first had to first had to figure out where basement waterproofing failure was. So we performed a Basement Inspection in order to determine where the water that was coming into the house was entering from.

The first thing we did was test the exterior foundation drain pipes. We ran water through the pipes to test for a clog, to which we found none. We then blew air through the drains to further test for any debris that would be blocking the foundation drains. Again, the test showed no blockage.

After failing to find any blockage in the exterior foundatin drains of the house we had to start digging to get a good look at the basement’s exterior wall. Once we began excavating we soon discovered the sources of the problem.

The first problem that was causing water in the basement was one of the downspouts from the gutters had been disconnected, allowing water to sit against the foundation wall. This water had found a crack in the mortar of the brick which had allowed it to make its way behind the exterior waterproofing, which was a material called Bituthene. Pushing the Bituthene away from the basement exterior wall, the water eventually wore down the basement wall and found a way inside the house, soaking the carpet and drywall.

To fix this problem, and to prevent any future basement moisture, we dug around the foundation of the home and applied a more secure Exterior Waterproofing solution. We then did some Grading and Diversion by adding in additional drainage pipes to divert the water away from the house. We finally fixed the gutter downspout to ensure that water would not be sitting on the basement exterior wall, effectively eliminating the source of the problem.
